The Story So Far

The Story So Far

Sonia shares the personal mission and vision behind Social Research Builders, and explains what drives her to make a meaningful impact

Over the last 10 years, I’ve had the huge privilege of working with amazing charities, big and small. I’ve witnessed first hand how passion, determination and collective desire to make a difference quite literally changes people’s lives and creates better communities. I’ve also witnessed first hand how effectively demonstrating that impact can transform your ability to secure funding, fulfil your mission and enable growth. And how without it, many small charities struggle to make ends meet, are living a hand to mouth existence and sometimes fold, regardless of how inspired their vision was.
What I’ve learned is that quality impact reporting is NOT universally accessible and is often completely out of reach for many small charities.

73% of all UK charities have an annual income of less than £100,000 per year (NCVO, 2022). Scarce resources make committing to spending hundreds of pounds on consultancy fees (often in excess of £500 per day!) difficult, and appointing a full or part-time Project Evaluator next to impossible.

Yet without the ability to accurately measure and report on their impact, securing further funding, growing their income and developing their organisation becomes even more challenging. This creates a perpetual cycle of stunted progress and a catch 22 situation.

Social Research Builders (SRB) Ltd. was created with a powerful social mission: to bridge the gap between charity income levels and consultancy charges, to democratise impact reporting to enable charities to grow, and crucially to create opportunities for a new generation of researchers.
For those who haven’t had the privilege to work in the Third Sector, let me tell you now, it is an awesome place to be! It is also the fastest growing sector in the UK (NCVO, 2023). However, it is often overlooked by young people as a viable career route. An aging workforce and volunteer demographic is a clear indication of that trend and presents a worrying picture for the future.

SRB aims to offer tangible, practical and hands-on opportunities for young people to gain real life experience of working in the charity sector, with the goal of developing skills and providing a stepping stone for the next generation of professionals, thus creating a more sustainable future for the sector. This is all while allowing us to keep associated costs to a minimum, creating affordable solutions for small charities.

If you wish to be a part of this movement, if you’re a charity looking for an affordable way to tell the story of your impact, a university looking for new opportunities for your students to engage with the charity sector, or indeed a student wanting to get practical hands on experience, I’d love to hear from you.
